Egypt: Gross negligence and inhumane treatment leads to the death of Essam Ali Atta Shalaby in Tora prison

Alkarama is very concerned about the continuation of torture and inhumane treatment in Egyptian prisons. The most recent example of this is the killing of Essam Ali Atta Shalaby (23) as a result of the torture he was subjected to by the National Security Service in the maximum security Tora prison.

The mother of the victim, Mrs Inam Ragheb, who was the last to see Issam, during a visit on Monday 25 October, says that during that visit she gave him a SIM card, and once he held it in his hand, the guards arrested him, dragged him to his cell, and violently beat him accusing him of having swallowed drugs. She heard his screams from the cell appealing to her.

Egypt : Arrest and torture of Mr Al Sayed

On 30 June 2011, Mr Al Sayed was arrested at his home by agents of the Criminal Investigation Branch of the Police, who were dressed as civilians. He was not presented with an arrest warrant nor was he given a reason for his arrest at the time.

Egypt – Two minors, Mohammed Kamal and Ahmed Mahmoud subjected to torture and sentenced by military tribunal

Alkarama submitted to cases of Mohammed Amin Kamal, Ahmed Jaber Mahmoud Othman to the United Nations today. These two students were arrested by the military for having breached the curfew and were sentenced to five years imprisonment following an unfair trial.

Egypt: Al Aswani's life is in danger in the prison of Lyman Tura.

Alkarama has requested the Egyptian authorities immediately release political prisoner Mohammad Al Aswani. Mr Al Aswani has spent more than thirty years in prison, arbitrary detained due to series of unfair trails which were made possible due to the unconstitutional emergency law in force at the time.
