Alkarama had previously requested the intervention of the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (communiqué of 24 January 2008), and the Special Rapporteur on torture (communiqué of 23 January 2009). On 24 April 2009, Alkarama again addressed to the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention.
Mr. Abdul Rahman Abdul Karim Al-Junahi, 37, is a citizen of the UAE, we was residing in Saudi Arabia where he studied religious sciences for several years.
He was arrested by the Saudi general information (Al-Mabahit Al-Aama) on 26 April 2007 at the airport in Riyadh. His family were unable to ascertain his whereabouts, nor were they able to visit him three months later at Alisha prison near Riyadh. The authorities claimed that he was accused of nothing specific that it "was only a preventive measure" and that it would soon be released.
His family tried to get news of him from the UAE's Ministry of the Interior. The officials initially denied his release by the Saudi authorities. Only at the insistence of his family did the Emirates admit two weeks later of his detention "for investigative purposes". They asserted that it was normal procedure and that he would certainly be released within two weeks. No further explanation was given.
